A Million Images

The kaleidoscopic range of the Cineteca’s Photo Archive includes over a million images. This enormous legacy represents a vast visual memory, and is driven by two principal motivations: on the one hand, the desire to photographically document the history of cinema, and on the other, to protect and make accessible the wealth of historical images of Bologna, the archive’s home city.

Two Sections: Film and Bologna

The Film Section is composed of over 350,000 photographs, including stills and images from film productions, portraits of actors and directors and a range of other visual documents sold or donated by photographers and collectors to the Cineteca. The Bologna Section incorporates over 800,000 images from 1873 to 2000, acquired by or given to the Cineteca. The archive brings together the entire bodies of work of some photographers, as well as individual images, small collections, family albums, postcards and stereoscopes. These materials are an integral part of the Bologna Photographic Alphabet project.

Opening a Dialogue Between Past and Present

The dynamic nature of the archive and its desire to a maintain a continuous dialogue with the present are expressed through regular series of exhibitions. These are based around specific topics or historical themes from the world of cinema, illustrating the potential for continuous rediscovery.
