The film section
The film section is composed of more than 350,000 photographs of the scene, films processing and portraits of actors and directors, divided into several collections:
Giuseppe Galliadi
A man of great foresight, Giuseppe Galliadi amassed a large collection of prints and negatives which has now joined the rest of the Cineteca archive. Part of the collection is consultable by appointment.
Piero Tortolina
Piero Tortolina was a collector of photographs and negatives which have become part of the Cineteca’s archive, and which are not consultable by the public.
Mario Natale
This collection includes photographs, postcards and other materials collected by Mario Natale throughout his work in film production. Consultation of some of the catalogued images is permitted.
Angelo Novi
The work of Angelo Novi, a great photojournalist and cinema photographer, was donated to the Cineteca by his heirs. Reorganization and conservation of the material means that it cannot be consulted.
Franco Pinna
Franco Pinna was an extraordinary photographer, specializing in ethnographic documentation and current-affairs reporting for some of Italy’s biggest weekly magazines. After meeting Federico Fellini, he worked extensively with the director and produced several photobooks inspired by his films. Prints and slides, donated to the Cineteca by his wife Anna Maria Greci, can be consulted by appointment.
Joseph Alexis Joye
The Cineteca has acquired the collection of stills produced by abbot Joseph Alexis Joye between 1898 and 1919, illustrating classics from world literature (from the Bible to Ali Baba) in order to produce educational tools that could transcend linguistic and cultural barriers. There is no public access to the collection.
Miscellany and the Toponi Collection
Two small collections of postcards comprise around 3,000 portraits of some of the most famous actors and actresses of the silent era as well as promotional photo albums made for the launch of Italian films from the 1930s and 40s. The postcards can be consulted by appointment.
Among others, the archive also includes the collections of Alfredo Bini, Alessandro Blasetti, Leda Gys, Libero Grandi, Italia – URSS, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Pierluigi Raffaelli, Renzo Renzi and Mario Turconi.
