The two main cinemas

Since its transfer to Via Azzo Gardino in 2003 and expansion to two screens (the Sala Scorsese with 174 seats, and the Sala Officinema/Mastroianni with 144), the Cinema Lumière has greatly diversified the range of films it shows. The blue seats of the Sala Scorsese continue to host screenings dedicated to all aspects of the history of cinema, continuing a two-decade tradition previously upheld by the Cinema Lumière in Via Pietralata. Meanwhile the red seats of the Sala Officinema/Mastroianni offer a place for audiences to explore a range of contemporary Italian productions and art films. The two cinematic showcases complement each other, broadening the choices available in two very different sectors of the market, seeking to increase the audience for the kind of film often penalized by the mainstream distribution system. And in addition to its regular programme, during the Cineteca’s festivals the Lumière’s screens become the event’s exhibition cinemas.
