Fellini. Dall'Italia alla luna

MAMbo – Museo d'Arte Moderna di Bologna
March 25th – July 25th, 2010

Fellini. Dall’Italia alla luna, a project co-produced by MAMbo - Museo d’Arte Moderna di Bologna and Cineteca di Bologna, traces the forty-year long career of an absolute genius of cinema, with an expansive show in the museum’s spaces and a film exhibition at the Cinema Lumière and in Piazza Maggiore. The exhibition, curated by Sam Stourdzé, analyzes the birth and development of Fellini’s myth, foregoing a chronological approach in favor of a depiction of the filmmaker through his obsessions, his inspirations, his dream-like imagery: the scenes, locations and backstage of his movies, the iconographic hyper-production of contemporary mass culture.

Fellini. Dall’Italia alla luna draws connections between movie excerpts, photographic documentation, newspaper reportages, televised images, drawings, documents and materials deriving from the filmmaker’s practice; it will open in MAMbo’s halls on the 50thanniversary of La Dolce Vita, with a wholly new setup. From its initial step at the Jeu de Paume in Paris – where it had been exhibited until last January, obtaining a wide success, under the title Fellini, la Grande Parade – the show opens in Bologna with a different title and two brand new sections: The Magic of out-of-“sink”, curated by Tatti Sanguineti and Roberto Chiesi, and focused on ‘Fellini and voice”, with a host of video and audio materials – and an array of original movie posters from a private collection, now acquired by Cineteca di Bologna.

Pop Culture, Fellini at Work, City of Women and Biographical Invention are the show’s main thematic sections, characterized by an engaging multimedia impact. They include over 200 photographs, 50 autograph drawings, 30 audio-video positions, of which 12 projections, hundreds of documents, magazine spreads, posters, billboards, slides, covers. The exhibition path will lead visitors to understand the themes informing Fellini’s filmmaking, as well as his personal obsessions: circus, caricatures, photo stories, women in their manifold incarnations, the re-creation of reality in Cinecittà, the ambivalence of religious feeling, imagination as a challenge to reality, psychoanalysis and dreams, the relation to the media, the attraction to glossy magazines, the refusal of television, the invention of words. A special focus is put on the dialectical relation between moving and static images: an array of screens and projectors offer excerpts and montages of Fellini’s works, first takes, unreleased scenes, as well as films and newsreels from that period.

Parallel to the MAMbo show, the film exhibition curated by Cineteca di Bologna will screen films written and directed by Fellini, as well as movies by other filmmakers inspired by his work. The films will all be shown in the Cinema Lumière, except the season’s grand final on the huge screen traditionally installed in Piazza Maggiore.

From March 25th to July 25th, 2010, MAMbo and Cineteca offer the following reduced rates:
